Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (Erstwhile Bengal Engineering College Shibpur, and Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur), the second oldest engineering institute in India, has been contributing to the nation's glory since its establishment on 24th November 1856. Department of Mechanical Engineering completes 100 years of existence in 2021. The department started its journey with a diploma course on Mechanical Engineering in 1921. The Bachelor's degree course was introduced in 1930. The Master's degree courses have been on offer since 1954. Since its inception, the department has had a rich legacy of producing extremely talented engineers, scientists, and academicians who have reached the pinnacle of success in their respective domains. The department has earned its name and fame, nationally and internationally, through its systematic teaching and research.
The academic society of the students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is the Society of Mechanical Engineers (SME). A number of international societies have their student section associated with the department, viz. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Indian Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE), and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
December 2021 marks the start of Centenary Celebrations for the department. The inaugural ceremony was held on 28th Dec 2021. A series of events, mostly in online mode, are planned to take place over the next few months. There will be a Centenary Lecture Series and the weekly invited lectures will be given by speakers (including department's alumni) from industrial organizations as well as educational and research institutes. A few seminars and workshops will also be organized. More information can be found on the relevant tabs.
